The 100-year old park is renowned as being the place where international football legends the Charlton brothers and Jackie Milburn played as youngsters. The funding will also establish an annual Charlton & Milburn Cup tournament so that local youth groups can follow in their footsteps.
The National Lottery funding will allow play facilities to be enhanced with water play features reintroduced, and the colourful floral displays that the park is so fondly remembered for will also be revived.
We collaborated with Southern Green Landscape Design on the design of the performance space and site furniture for the park. This included the design of bespoke seating using local stone, a performance space with cast iron artworks inset into the resin bound floorscape, engraved sandstone memorial space and cast iron coal seams.
We designed the seating around the safety messages taken from our research at Woodhorn Colliery. The panels covered a range of topics and themes from the Charltons who used to play football there to the flower park and traditional park features that have now been revived.
We designed and built the interpretation panels using recyclable PrimaDura Panels and steel frames fabricated locally.
