As the artwork is tall it needs structure and I have explored how grass is formed to provide both rigidity and flexibility. It is interesting to note that this grass, along with many has a “foxtail”. A foxtail is a spikelet or cluster of grass that serves to disperse its seeds as a unit. Thus the foxtail is a type of “diaspore” or plant dispersal unit and means to “scatter about”. This is held together as thin threads twisted around each other to create strength in unity. I have created grooves in the steel that seen from different angles shows you to see a grass forming.out it simply means “to scatter about”.
Diaspore is a word you often hear to describe different communities too. I really like this notion of strands taking different thin threads and twisting them together to unify and make them stronger. When people come together they are always stronger.
